about

"At eventide, be so big that sky will learn Sky."
– Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda

Eventide was created from a live session that we recorded for the birthday of someone dear to us– vocalist-bassist-composer Ganavya Doraiswamy. The title of the album is a reference to Monument Eternal, a spiritual manifesto written by Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, an artist who has been especially significant to Ganavya’s creative journey.

Ganavya asked us to make a record as a duo, building on the musical connection and the rhythmic curiosities we have shared over the years. Though we have played together in various contexts since 2011, this is our first documentation of material as a duo. Eventide features compositions we each wrote independently and then improvised with collaboratively.

Much of the music moves through cyclical elements, organic transformations, and patterned textures. We hope that it reflects the potent depth and expansiveness of the evening, as described by Turiyasangitananda. Proceeds from this album will benefit Land Restoration, through donations to forthewild.world.

about

Rajna Swaminathan and Miles Okazaki Brooklyn, New York

Rajna Swaminathan has been described as “a vital new voice” (Pop Matters), creating “music of gravity and rigor… yet its overall effect is accessible and uplifting” (Wall Street Journal).

One of only a few women who play the mrudangam professionally, Rajna received her creative foundation on the instrument from her father, P.K. Swaminathan, and mrudangam legend Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman.
